Courses are based on the Auditory-Verbal Therapy Curriculum developed by Auditory-Verbal International, Inc®.

Courses Information
Preliminary
This course is an introduction to the principles of the Auditory-Verbal approach.
It includes information about listening and spoken language, the function of the ear, hearing aids and cochlear implants, and the role of parents and professionals when working with children with hearing loss.
No prerequisite qualifications are required for the Preliminary Course.
Intermediate
This course provides a baseline qualification, using the Auditory-Verbal approach, for the teaching of listening and spoken language to children with hearing loss.
Advanced
This course provides practical skills and training in the application of the Auditory-Verbal approach, including strategies for facilitating the development of audition, language and speech, assessment and goal-setting techniques for the Auditory-Verbal child, cochlear implant candidacy, technology and trouble-shooting.
Extension
This course provides specialised training in the application of the Auditory-Verbal approach, including Auditory-Verbal therapy clinical skills and techniques, the neurodevelopment of language, the genetic basis of deafness, surgical management for children with hearing loss, professional mentoring, research projects and outcomes.
What do our Auditory-Verbal Therapy courses provide?
- Forty hours of formal training including lectures and informal discussions and networking opportunities. Practical skills to enable and enhance the clinical and educational application of Auditory-Verbal Therapy.
- Provision of a framework for establishing new clinics using Auditory-Verbal Therapy.
- Skills to incorporate listening as a way of life for children and adults with hearing loss.
- Information on the multidisciplinary team needed to ensure success in an Auditory-Verbal Therapy program.
- Current knowledge of neurology, diagnostics, intervention and hearing technology, including newborn hearing screening.
- Information on current surgical techniques and medical intervention for cochlear implants.
- Points towards international certification and accreditation as an Auditory-Verbal Therapist.
- Please note: In order to obtain certification it is necessary for candidates to be qualified as a Speech Language Pathologist, Teacher of the Deaf, or an Audiologist.

The Auditory-Verbal Therapy techniques allow teachers, professionals and parents to establish listening-speaking environments to ensure that children with hearing loss can maximise their potential. The focus is the educational mainstreaming of the Auditory-Verbal child.
Sessions are interactive and personalised to enable Course participants to discuss issues of relevance and apply Auditory-Verbal techniques in their own working and clinical environment.

- Director of Training: Dr Dimity Dornan A.M., BSpTh, LSLS Cert. AVT., FSPAA, CPSP. Dimity Dornan is the Managing Director and Founder of Hear and Say and has been working in the field of hearing loss for over 20 years.

Ear Nose & Throat Surgeons : specialist paediatric Cochlear Implant surgeons. They supervise the delivery of Hear and Say services and support the Hear and Say Cochlear Implant Program (Queensland’s largest paediatric CI program).

Audiologist/Habilitationist: Emma Rushbrooke MAudSA., BA, LSLS Cert. AVT, DipAud, R.N., Emma is the Clinical Director at the Hear and Say Centre.

Habilitationist: Jackie Brown BEd, LSLS Cert. AVT is a Teacher of the Deaf with over 30 years experience in the field of hearing loss and also the Clinical Manager – Auditory Verbal Therapy at Hear and Say.

Audiologist: Jane McGovern BA, MAudSt, MASA (CC) is the Clinical Manager – Audiology at Hear and Say and leads the Hear and Say Cochlear Implant program.
Course Delivery
On-Campus:
Each course runs for five (5) days and is conducted at the Hear and Say Centre, Munro Street, Auchenflower, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
The Centre is a short distance from the central business district of Brisbane, and is accessible by public transport (bus or train). For those travelling by car, ample parking is available.
e-Learning:
Our Courses are available in e-Learning mode 24/7 and are designed to allow maximum flexibility to suit your schedule and individual learning needs.

On-Campus Courses include lunch, morning and afternoon tea. Comprehensive supplementary notes are available for each participant. Every attempt is made to meet the individual professional and personal needs of participants. As this course is personalised and interactive, numbers are limited and payment of fees is required prior to course commencement.
(A minimum of 15 people is required to conduct this course).
e-Learning Courses allow participants to join scheduled sessions in our virtual classroom with your instructors and other e-Learning participants or to work independently.
